Michael Beale made it three wins on the spin as Rangers boss but there is still work to be done in the eyes of the Ibrox legions who are still to be convinced following a single goal win over Ross County in Dingwall on Friday night. And some on the Hotline want to see more urgency from the former QPR gaffer in the transfer market after he said he will wait and assess what he’s got rather than rush into make signings in the January window.
That, though, in the eyes of some supporters is raising the white flag in the Scottish Premiership title race this season. Others might argue that the gap to leaders and rivals Celtic is too big and that it’s better to think long term.
Either way, John Lundstram’s winner wasn’t enough to keep some punters happy after their Highland festive fling on Friday. Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: “Having watched Rangers’ performance against Ross County, it just confirmed that Fashion Sakala and Rabbi Matondo are just average players. If Michael Beale thinks we can wait until the summer for signing decent players then he and the Rangers board have already conceded the league to Celtic and that is utterly shameful. Also, Jon McLaughlin should never have been dropped.
"Yes, he made a couple of mistakes but he's a great keeper. Allan McGregor should be the back-up goalie. McGregor won’t last much longer, especially when Europe comes around, so we need to keep McLaughlin in.”
John Steel said: “Michael Beale should come out and tell the fans he's been promised transfer money but he said he might not need new players because the ones he has could be good enough. That proves to me he's not been given any promises by the board and he’s the cheap option. Why not tell us the truth? I do think he's a good manager and he will get the best out of the players but we need another defender. We can't depend on Connor Goldson all the time.”
Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, said: "Given the amount of Injuries Michael Beale has had to deal with, and a squad that are in many cases walking wounded, then Beale should really be judged next season. Players are coming back, but I fear nine points may already be too big a gap to win the league. Cup success may be this season's saviour.”
Lewis Fotheringham, Mount Ellen, said: “One caller said Aberdeen attacked more against Rangers because they weren’t as good as Celtic but, no matter which side is better than the other, Aberdeen have for the last 40 years tried harder against Rangers than Celtic. Last Saturday they were saving their energy for Rangers on Tuesday and no doubt it will be the same come the League Cup semi-final.”
Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “Rangers now have a new manager and although the games have been tight his record is three wins out of three. What was Ange Postecoglou’s record when he took over? Far worse is the answer. I don’t how things will go but if they progress the same way then Celtic don’t have a chance of winning the league, never mind being close. I’m not saying Rangers are superior at the moment but the facts about Michael Beale’s first three games compared to the so-called Angeball are stark.”
