The jury might be out among Rangers fans over the imminent appointment of Michael Beale as manager but Hotline regular John Bruce has no doubt he’s the right man for the job.
He emailed: “The West of Scotland is notoriously ‘glass half empty’. If you put 99 positive situations in front of its football fans and one negative, they’ll zero in on the negative every time. As is the case with Michael Beale to Rangers. He was the brains in the management team that brought us 55 and saw Celtic unable to beat us for three years. His were the tactics that took us back into Europe.
"He is a well respected coach who is more than able to hit the ground running at Ibrox as the new manager. There’s one Scottish club whose fans should have negative vibes about his appointment, if it’s made - and it’s not Rangers.”
But Denis Bruce, Bishopbriggs, isn’t so sure. He said: “If Michael Beale returns to Rangers, he will come in under a cloud that his principles are for sale. His words about his refusal to entertain Wolves’ attempts to entice him to become manager of that club will appear to have been written on water or to be hollow and without substance, if he forsakes QPR after declaring his allegiance to loyalty and honour.
“Is this what we are to expect from managers that they will say one thing and then do the exact opposite? If he arrives at Ibrox and fails to deliver the goods, he will be a busted flush in the eyes of those who expect words to mean what they say.”
Dumbarton-based Hibee Brian Stavert emailed his opinion on his club putting one of their star names up for sale in January, saying: “So Ryan Porteous has refused to sign a new contract. Let the big head go because he has been dire for the last five weeks.
"One game for Scotland and he thought he was a superstar. Get him out in January and spend the money.”
Celtic fan John Melrose, Edinburgh, reckons his team is right to be complaining about VAR decisions. He said: “The person on the Hotline last week talking about whining Celtic fans is out of luck in his attempt to deflect from the truth.
"The farcical decisions that have been dished out to only one Glasgow club in every single game since VAR came in is an utter joke and Celtic are right to confront the SFA. The Jota “offside” cameragate scandal just doesn’t add up but VAR also means our evidence portfolio is building up.”
Onto the World Cup, and it’s fair to say it hasn’t captured the imagination. Scott Kerr, Knightswood , said: “England are so overhyped. The English media think they are world beaters but USA should have beaten them and France, Brazil, Spain, Argentina, even Germany would destroy them. It ain’t coming home but they will be going home.”
Alan Lough, Dunbar , emailed: “The World Cup is highlighting for us yet again the difference in personal attitude between Ronaldo and Messi and proving why Man Utd are glad to see Ronaldo gone. Messi only cares about the team. Ronaldo is obsessed with himself and nothing else.”
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, added: “Just letting the BBC and ITV know that I am available for commentary for up and coming World Cup games. I don’t know much about football but it would appear that is not important.”
Terry Rielly emailed: “Is it just me or does anyone else think this is the worst World Cup ever? No atmosphere, no decent football and VAR ruining what little excitement there is.” Jake Curley, Edinburgh, added: “Just our luck we’re not at this World Cup because the wee diddy teams are getting some good results. “
