Mic’d up: Kyren Williams will protect Matthew Stafford at all costs

You’d be hard-pressed to find a player as passionate and fiery as Kyren Williams on game days. The Rams running back always puts his heart and soul into every game no matter the circumstances, whether it’s the preseason or a playoff matchup.

It’s what Sean McVay loves about him, and Matthew Stafford sure appreciates him, too.

Williams was mic’d up against the Cardinals and he takes his job of protecting Stafford very seriously. Whether he was trying to lead block for the quarterback on his scramble near the end zone or chipping defenders on the edge to make sure they don’t get near the QB, Williams always has Stafford’s back.

There was one play in the Rams-Cardinals game where Williams chipped defensive end L.J. Collier on the edge as he was getting blocked by Alaric Jackson, sending the big man stumbling backwards.

“Damn, bro. I wasn’t nowhere near the QB, man!” Collier chirped at Williams.

The Rams running back didn’t care whether Collier was a foot from Stafford or a mile.

“I don’t give a (expletive),” he replied.

Williams told running backs coach Ron Gould on the sideline afterwards that he never lets anyone get close to his quarterback.

“I don’t let nobody run free on Matthew. I had to hit his (expletive),” he said.

As good as Williams is with the ball in his hands, he might be even better as a blocker. What a perfect player to have on the roster.
