Miami Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose was carted off the field on Sunday after sustaining a head injury during the team's game against the Houston Texans. The incident occurred in the third quarter when DuBose attempted to catch a pass and was hit in the head by Texans rookie safety Calen Bullock, resulting in a helmet-to-helmet collision.
Following the hit, DuBose was down on the field for over 10 minutes as medical personnel attended to him. His jersey was cut off, his facemask was unscrewed, and a neck brace was placed on him before he was taken off the field on a cart. Players from both teams gathered, with some seen praying, as DuBose received on-field care.
After being taken to the hospital, DuBose was reported to be in stable condition and is currently undergoing further evaluation. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa expressed concern for DuBose's well-being, stating that he felt responsible for putting his teammate in harm's way with the pass that led to the hit.
Head coach Mike McDaniel provided an update on DuBose's condition, mentioning positive feedback from head and neck imaging. DuBose will remain at Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston overnight for continued monitoring.
Texans safety Calen Bullock, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness on the play, expressed remorse for the incident, emphasizing that he had no intention of causing harm. Bullock highlighted the challenges faced by defensive players in balancing player safety while playing a physically demanding sport.
The Dolphins had recently activated DuBose for the game after he had been on the injured list due to a shoulder injury. The team, along with fans and fellow players, are hopeful for DuBose's swift recovery and return to the field.
