Mhairi Black mocks top Tory at PMQs following gaffe over SNP time in power

A top Tory has been mocked after he revealed that he did not know how long the SNP had been in power.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden told Mhairi Black that the SNP had been in the Scottish Government for 13 years.

The party have been in power since 2007.

Dowden was stepping in for Rishi Sunak at Prime Minister's Questions as Sunak is heading to Japan for a G7 meeting. Other parties also fielded their deputy leaders.

SNP deputy Westminster leader Black slammed Dowden over problems with Brexit.

She said: “Just today, the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer said that Brexit was, and again I quote, a threat to our export business and the sustainability of our UK manufacturing options.

“Even Nigel Farage can admit that Brexit has failed. So why can’t he?”

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden replied: “One of the best ways of getting behind industry in this country is to get behind the trade deals we are striking with many countries around the world.”

He added: "I see last week the SNP promised to build a new Scotland. I don’t know whether she is aware, but the SNP have been in power for 13 years.”

His comments provoked loud laughter from the SNP benches. The party's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn pointed at the ceiling, indicating the the SNP had been in office for longer.

Black laughed and pointed at the Tory benches, to show that it was them that had been in power for 13 years.

The Tories took office 13 years ago in 2010. The SNP came to power 16 years ago in 2007.

Black said after PMQs: "It doesn't surprise me that Dowden can't count, nor that he has no idea about Scotland and its government."

A No10 spokesman said: "Of course the Deputy Prime Minister knows when the SNP came to power."

Black had asked Dowden earlier: "In 2016, the Deputy Prime Minister told his constituents in a blog that it was his duty to furnish them 'with all the facts that are available' with regards to Brexit.

"Today, Brexit Britain faces higher food prices, a lack of workers, a shrinking economy and a decline in living standards. Why is he happy to ignore those facts?"

Dowden responded: "We have one of the fastest growth rates in the whole of the G7.

"In fairness, we all know the policy of the SNP: this weekend, an SNP spokesperson said that we need 'to undo Brexit'.

"If I were them, I would start by undoing the mess they have left Scotland in and start working with the United Kingdom Government, and focus on the priorities of the Scottish people, not the priorities of their party."
