Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for a calm and measured response following US President Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining composure in the face of uncertainty, stating that her government first learned about the potential tariffs through media reports. She indicated that Mexico would refrain from making any hasty decisions until an official announcement is made.
During a news conference on Monday, Sheinbaum expressed her stance, saying, 'We found out the same way, through media reports. We’ll wait. We need to keep a cool head on this. Let’s wait and see if there’s an announcement today, and from there, we’ll make our decisions.'
Trump had disclosed his intention to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States during a statement to the press on Sunday.
It is crucial to note that both Canada and Mexico play significant roles as steel suppliers to the US. Canada stands as the top exporter of steel to the US, while Mexico ranks as the third largest supplier. Data from the American Iron and Steel Institute reveals that Canada contributes nearly a quarter of the steel imported by American businesses by weight, with Mexico accounting for approximately 12%.
