Mexico shooting: 12 killed by gunman after he opens fire in bar massacre

A gunman has killed 12 people after he shot indiscriminately in a Mexican bar.

He opened fire in the mass shooting at the venue, which is located in the central Mexican city of Irapuato, within the state of Guanajuato.

While the motives of the gunman are not yet clear, Guanajuato is known as a "gang-plagued" state, with this attack being the second mass shooting in less than a month, according to local authorities.

Six women and six men died in the massacre, which occurred on Saturday evening, shortly before 8pm.

The city government reported that three people have been injured in the shooting, and that security officials were trying to track down the assailants.

Paramedics from the Red Cross arrived at the scene and attended to the seriously injured, before they were transported to hospital.

Some people were able to escape the scene unharmed, through an entrance at the back of the bar.

Only weeks ago, on September 21, another bar shooting took place in Guanajuato, this time in the town of Tarimoro, about 60 miles (96 km) southeast of Irapuato.

A total of 10 people were shot dead.

The state of Guanajuato has been wracked in recent years by turf wars between rival drug gangs.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador pledged to reduce record levels of gang violence in Mexico, but he has struggled to do so.

During his six-year term, the tally for homicides is on track to be the highest in Mexico's modern history by a substantial margin, despite falling in 2022.

He laid the blame at corruption in previous governments.
