Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her country's commitment to defending its sovereignty and supporting Mexicans in the United States following President Donald Trump's recent executive orders and actions that could impact Mexican immigrants living in the US.
Immigration Policies
Sheinbaum stated during a news conference that the orders signed by Trump are reminiscent of those from his first term, emphasizing that Mexico has previously experienced similar situations. She noted that the current number of migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border is significantly lower than in the past.

Trump's recent immigration measures include declaring a national emergency at the southern US border, ending the use of the CBP One app, and initiating a process to end birthright citizenship, which is expected to result in a legal battle.
Cartel Designation
In response to Trump's designation of cartels as terrorist organizations, Sheinbaum expressed her intention to coordinate with the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the matter. However, she emphasized that Mexico is a 'free, independent, and sovereign' country and will act in accordance with Mexican laws.
Sheinbaum stated, 'We are going to act in defense of our sovereignty and seek coordination and collaboration. The US, in turn, should act within the framework of their sovereignty on their territory.'
The Gulf Controversy
She also addressed the controversy surrounding Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Sheinbaum affirmed that Mexico and the international community will continue to recognize the area as the Gulf of Mexico.
President Sheinbaum's statements underscore Mexico's commitment to upholding its sovereignty and engaging in diplomatic discussions with the United States on critical issues affecting both nations.
