Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened legal action against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" on Google Maps for U.S. users, a change reflecting a decision made by the Trump administration.

The Gulf of Mexico has been recognized internationally for centuries, but the Trump administration issued a decree renaming it the "Gulf of America" for U.S. maps.

Google implemented the change, sparking backlash from Mexico, which argues that U.S. jurisdiction only extends 22 nautical miles from its coastline, according to Reuters.

On Thursday, Sheinbaum reiterated her opposition, stating that Mexico's legal team is reviewing potential civil action if Google does not restore the original name.

While Google Maps users in Mexico still see "Gulf of Mexico," and international users see both names, U.S. users see only "Gulf of America."

The dispute has escalated as Google has yet to reverse the change despite Mexico's protests. Additionally, Google has not responded publicly to Mexico's concerns.
