Mexican authorities made significant strides in combating organized crime this week with the arrest of two high-ranking members of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. The arrests came just days before the Trump administration designated several criminal groups based in Mexico as foreign terrorist organizations.

The individuals apprehended include Jose Angel Canobbio Inzunza and Kevin Alonso, both allegedly associated with the Sinaloa Cartel. Canobbio Inzunza, believed to be a close aide to one of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, was indicted in the United States for his involvement in drug trafficking activities.

According to the US Department of Justice, Canobbio Inzunza was accused of manufacturing and importing cocaine, fentanyl, and other drugs into the United States. He was reported to have led an armed security group known as 'Los Chimales,' providing security for the Guzman faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Kevin Alonso, also known as '200,' was arrested for managing security for a faction within the Sinaloa Cartel and coordinating the group's procurement of weapons and ammunition. Mexican authorities, including the Army, National Guard, and Air Force, carried out the operation in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

In a separate incident, Mauro, an aviator pilot and key operator within a criminal cell, was apprehended following a deadly armed confrontation. He was identified as a trusted confidant of the group's leader and linked to violent clashes with authorities and drug trafficking activities.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed concerns over the US decision to designate certain criminal groups in Mexico as terrorist organizations. She emphasized that the decision was made without consultation with the Mexican government and reiterated the importance of respecting national sovereignty.

The arrests and operations conducted by Mexican authorities aim to reduce violence in Sinaloa attributed to criminal organizations. The ongoing efforts underscore Mexico's commitment to combating organized crime and maintaining security within its borders.
