Mets Owner Apologizes to Angry Marlins for Having to Postpone Key Game

Mets owner Steve Cohen apologized to the Marlins after New York postponed Tuesday night’s game between the two teams due to unplayable conditions at Citi Field.

“Our sincere apologies to the Marlins and their fans for having to postpone last night’s game,” Cohen said on social media. “We know how important this series is to the Marlins and every effort was made to get the field playable.”

Due to after effects of rain from Tropical Storm Ophelia in New York over the weekend, the Mets grounds crew was unable to get Citi Field ready in time for the first game of the Mets-Marlins series on Tuesday. Instead, the two teams will play in a double-header on Wednesday.

However, the Marlins, who sit 0.5 games back of the Cubs for the final Wild Card spot entering Wednesday, were reportedly upset that they could not play the game Tuesday night.

Miami was set to have Braxton Garrett throw in two of the team’s final six games, first Tuesday then Sunday, but now must decide whether to use Garrett on three days’ rest or pitch someone else in the regular season finale. Garrett enters Wednesday with a 3.53 ERA, best among healthy Marlins starting pitchers.

SNY reporter Steve Gelbs explained that fell over the weekend than the grounds crew expected, and there wasn’t enough time in between when the rain stopped and the Tuesday game began for the field to properly dry.

The Marlins will play three games against the Mets before traveling to Pittsburgh to finish the season against the Pirates. They are battling the Diamondbacks, Cubs and Reds for the final two spots in the NL playoff picture.
