Metro services between North Shields and Tynemouth off until next week after wall collapse

Metro services between North Shields and Tynemouth are unlikely to run until after the weekend.

Following the collapse of a wall over the railway line at North Shields, Tyne and Wear Metro operators Nexus have confirmed that the route between North Shields and Tynemouth will be closed while repairs take place.

On a video released by the operators, the Metro's Commercial Services Director, Hew Lewis explained that services on the route are unlikely to resume over the weekend.

Mr Lewis said: "You can see that a wall has collapsed right over the railway line. There is loose masonry lying there that at any time could fall onto the tracks so we had to close the line between North Shields and Tynemouth.

"It is not a quick job to repair the damage. We need to put scaffolding in place, turn the power off and that would affect a much wider area than just these two stations."

He urged for the public to remain patient while the repairs take place and did offer that a replacement bus service will now be in place along the route.

"We're going to take our time to do that and we ask you to bear with us while that job is done.

"If you need to catch a train from North Shields to Tynemouth, go to whichever station makes more sense for your journey.

"There is a replacement bus if you are travelling through the area but we don't expect this to come back over the weekend.

"We're going to get the job done safely during the major line closure next week."

Nexus have confirmed that they are operating a 12 minute service between North Shields and St James stations, but not to the Metro timetable.

They are operating a service between Tynemouth and South Shields, departing Tynemouth/South Shields every 15 minutes.
