Metro service set to return to Sunderland Station following flood damage

Metro services are to resume at Sunderland Station after trains were previously suspended following flooding damage.

National Rail had confirmed on Sunday (January 1) that trains were unable to call at Sunderland Station until further notice due to flooding causing damage to the railway.

Nexus, the operators of the Tyne and Wear Metro, has now confirmed Network Rail have advised Metro trains will be able to stop at Platform 4 at Sunderland station from 8am on Thursday. The first train scheduled at the stop at Sunderland Station is for 8:21am.

Nexus has, however, advised passengers that services will only run as far as East Boldon station as Network Rail are still carrying out works to re-open Sunderland Station fully.

A rail replacement bus has been laid on between for South Hylton and St Peter’s all day Thursday.

According to rail operators Grand Central Rail, the flooding had affected station infrastructure, which prevented access to the platforms, rather than the tracks themselves.

Sunderland Station is also currently undergoing regeneration work as part of £26 million revamp project with service remaining suspended between Park Lane and South Hylton stations as a result.

In a statement posted on their social media, Nexus said: "Network Rail have advised us that after 08:00am tomorrow morning, Metro trains can stop at Sunderland Station using Platform 4 only, the first train scheduled to stop at Sunderland will be 08:21am."

"Passengers should be advised however, that in order for Network Rail to be able to carry out work to re-open the station, all scheduled trains before 08:00am tomorrow morning will only run as far as East Boldon."

"A replacement bus, the 901, is running between South Hylton and St Peter’s all day Thursday. The bus timetable can be found online by following the link Live travel news."

According to Nexus, the first train to depart Sunderland Station will be at 08.36 from Platform 4.
