A Metropolitan Police officer has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car during a foot chase in southeast London.

The incident occurred around midday on Thursday when officers responded to concerns about a woman's safety in Bexleyheath.

The officer was hit by a vehicle - unconnected to the original incident - while pursuing a suspect on foot along Erith Road, which has since been cordoned off.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “A police officer has been taken to hospital following a collision in Bexleyheath this afternoon.

“Police were responding to a report concerning the safety of a woman who was with a man on Mayplace Road West at around 11:59hrs on Thursday, 13 February.

“Officers attended and pursued a man on foot.

“During the foot pursuit, an officer was involved in a collision with a car unrelated to the incident they were dealing with.

“He has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of domestic common assault.”

Emergency services remain at the scene, with Erith Road closed to traffic. Several bus routes have been diverted whilst police continue their investigation.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
