A powerful snowstorm is set to hit the UK in the coming days, with weather maps predicting up to 13cm of snowfall in some areas. Forecasters warn that this storm, rolling in from the west of Portugal, could bring significant disruptions as it sweeps across the country on March 9.
According to weather charts from Ventusky, the heaviest snowfall is expected to hit the southwest of England and the Midlands. Swindon and surrounding towns are predicted to see as much as five inches (13cm) of snow, while Northampton could be blanketed in up to four inches. Leicester and Peterborough may see around three inches, while Birmingham and Lincoln could get a lighter dusting of just an inch.

Although the Met Office has not explicitly forecasted snow for early March, they have warned of shifting weather patterns. Their latest update mentions “high pressure and unsettled conditions” becoming “more dominant throughout the country” during this period.
The last time the UK saw snow in March was in 2023 when parts of southeast London plunged into sub-zero temperatures. This incoming system could bring similar conditions, though it remains uncertain how widespread the snowfall will be.
The Met Office has indicated a clear split in weather conditions as spring begins. “North-western areas will likely see spells of rain and stronger winds as Atlantic weather systems arrive from the west,” they stated. While wet and windy weather will move southeast at times, high pressure is expected to maintain a grip on the southern regions, at least initially.
For those in the south, early March should bring relatively calm conditions, with dry weather, occasional frosts at night, and morning fog patches. However, as the month progresses, the likelihood of more widespread unsettled conditions will increase.

“Through the course of this period, the chance of unsettled conditions becoming more dominant across the country increases,” the Met Office said, adding that while temperatures should generally be around average, “milder interludes” are also likely.
With the storm now tracking towards the UK, weather experts are advising residents to stay alert for possible disruptions. If snow accumulates as predicted, travel and daily routines in affected areas could be significantly impacted. The next few days will be crucial in determining how intense this storm will be and whether the UK is in for its most significant March snowfall in recent years.
