Met Office warns of 'Arctic air' as UK temperatures set to plunge

Brits across the country might want to start wrapping up warm after the Met Office warned of plummeting temperatures.

According to forecasters, the UK will soon be struck by 'cold Arctic air' which will spread throughout the country throughout the week. It means that temperatures will drop dramatically and conditions may become wetter.

While southern parts of the country will be noticeably warmer, parts further up north will be much colder. However, the worst hit areas will be Scotland with some areas dipping to 10C.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “This week will see temperatures below average for the time of year for many. Blustery winds will become confined to the far northeast overnight, with winds falling light elsewhere. This will allow widespread frost by night, though in sunshine by day, it should feel pleasant enough.

"Wintry showers will continue across the northeast, becoming confined to Orkney and Shetland by tomorrow afternoon."

For the bank holiday weekend, milder air will push temperatures up as some parts of the country see conditions slightly warmer than average. However, the Met Office has highlighted that it is still too early to provide a completely accurate forecast.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Nick Silkstone said: “It will potentially take until the end of the week for the milder air to push as far north as northern Scotland.”
