Met Office warns 79 UK areas may see MORE snow and ice - will wintry blast hit your area?

Communities have been warned to brace for a further flurry of snow this weekend, bringing with it potential travel chaos.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice covering 79 areas across Scotland, Wales and large swathes of England.

Those living in the regions affected have been told to brace for another coating of snow, with the warning in place between 3am and 9pm on Sunday, December 18.

Rural communities could become cut off by the big freeze, while weather experts said the fresh snowfall could bring with it travel chaos, including stranded cars and cancelled trains and flights.

Cold weather-related injuries could also rise, along with the chance of power cuts.

A second yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for the rest of England, including the south east.

Residents have been told care will be needed as rain freezes and turns to ice.

The forecast meant there would be little respite from the cold conditions, with large chunks of the UK still under a white blanket after last weekend's heavy snow and chilly Arctic blasts.

The Met Office, issuing its yellow warning about snow, said on Thursday: “A band of snow is expected to move north-east across the UK on Sunday, in most places lasting two-to-four hours before turning to rain.”

As much as 15cm of snow could fall on "high ground" in Scotland's central belt on Sunday.

But low-lying areas could expect between 1cm and 3cm after a dry start to the day, the meteorologist said.

The Met Office said it wasn't only snow that people and travellers need to be cautious about.

While lying snow is expected to be cleared by Sunday’s rain, the cold temperatures could result in “freezing rain”.

“In addition to the snow and ice, strong winds are expected across all parts, with gales or severe gales mainly across high ground,” the Met Office said.

“This will lead to blizzard conditions in some areas for a time.

“A brief period of freezing rain is also possible, most likely to impact areas from the Pennines northwards, with a consequent risk of ice accretion on structures and power lines.”
