Met Office responds to claim UK to be blasted by snow as Beast from East returns

The Met Office has blasted claims the Beast from the East is back and has confirmed there is no snow in the forecast for the UK.

Forecasters have told the Mirror the weather for the next week is not coming from the East - which would usually mean polar air was brought into the UK as a result of easterly winds from the near continent.

They have confirmed that the weather is currently coming from the south and west and instead of being hit by snow, the country faces an onslaught of rain as "system after system" hits.

Met Office meteorologist Diane Stroud told the Mirror: "The weather is firmly from the south and west for the rest of the week.

"There is no Beast from the East."

She added: "We have a clear start for Monday, some frost in Scotland with temperatures as low as -8c but no snow.

"It's another fine and dry day for the South and East.

"For the rest of the week it really is all about the rain, we have system after system of rain across the country."

The forecast comes as the year 2022 was declared officially the warmest year ever for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, since records began in 1884.

And all of the top 10 warmest years have occurred since 2003.

2022 was also the warmest year on record in the 364-year Central England temperature series from 1659 - which is the world’s longest instrumental record of temperature.

Dr Mark McCarthy is the head of the Met Office’s National Climate Information Centre.

He said: “2022 is going to be the warmest year on record for the UK. While many will remember the summer’s extreme heat, what has been noteworthy this year has been the relatively consistent heat through the year, with every month except December being warmer than average.

“The warm year is in line with the genuine impacts we expect as a result of human-induced climate change.

"Although it doesn’t mean every year will be the warmest on record, climate change continues to increase the chances of increasingly warm years over the coming decades.”
