Met Office predicts rain showers and snow for North East as temperatures start to drop

Torrential rain brought disruption across the North East on Thursday - and more showers are predicted - but not as heavy.

Road and rail services in the region were affected in the downpours on Thursday and the opening day of Newcastle's Winter Wonderland was cancelled due to adverse conditions. The Met Office had a yellow weather warning for rain, which ended on Friday morning.

According to the latest forecast, the rain is to ease over the coming few days, although there will still be some showers across the region. And there is likely to be snow over hilly areas.

Met Office experts say it will become colder over the weekend, with maximum temperatures between 7C and 8C. And there is a forecast for hill snow over Saturday night and Sunday morning. The Cheviots in Northumberland will see temperatures fall to -1C in the early hours of Sunday, and there will be snowfall.

Here's the five-day weather forecast for the North East from the Met Office.
