Met Office predictions on Liverpool snowfall and Boxing Day weather

It is going to be a cold and windy Boxing Day today as the Met Office has its say on the chance of snow.

With rain showering parts of Merseyside for Christmas Day, there isn't going to be much improvement today as temperatures are expected to drop, with more rain on the way. Looking further into the New Year, the Met Office has even forecast a some chance of snow.

But for today, the Met Office predicts that Liverpool will see temperatures reach around 6C today as wintery showers are expected. The forecast reads: " Feeling much colder with strong winds and coastal gales possible. Maximum temperature 7C."

As we head into tonight, temperatures are expected to fall close to freezing, bringing thick clouds, wind and patchy rain. Temperatures in some areas could drop as low as -2C.

For the rest of the week, the Met Office predicts:

Tuesday: Increasingly wet and windy during the morning with occasional heavy rain and coastal gales possible around the middle of the day. Becoming drier later with winds easing by the evening. Maximum temperature 9C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Staying changeable and generally unsettled with periods of rain, heavy at times, interspersed by brighter and more showery spells. Generally mild but somewhat colder on Thursday. Windy with gales possible.

A large area of North America is experiencing extremely low temperatures with very cold northerly winds which does impact the medium-range outlook for the UK. David Oliver said: "As is often the case, the conditions across the Atlantic play an important role in dictating our weather in the UK.

"We won’t see any direct impacts from the event currently occurring across North America. Rather, the temperature contrasts that develop across the North Atlantic as a result of this will help strengthen the jet stream, which plays a big role in the weather we get in the UK.

"The jet stream will help to develop low pressure systems which are likely to affect the UK between Christmas and New Year. These will bring some wet and windy weather at times and the chance of some snow in the north of the UK, as is often the case at this time of year."

The long-range forecast from December 30 to January 8 predicts heavy showers and risk of snow. It reads: "Windy conditions likely, with gales possible across higher ground and towards the coasts. Temperatures close to the seasonal average.

"Weather remaining changeable into the New Year, with rain and showers most frequent in the west and northwest. Increased likelihood of longer dry periods as well, most likely towards the east and southeast. Any snowfall will be restricted to Scottish mountains. Mild in the south for the later part of the period, whilst the north sees a mixture of milder and colder spells."
