Met Office names Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice - issues yellow warning for Bristol

The Met Office has announced that two storms have been given names ahead of their landfall in the UK this week. Both yellow warnings and amber warnings have been issued for the whole country.

Storm Dudley is the first storm, set to arrive on Wednesday afternoon. An amber warning has been issued from 6pm for much of Scotland and some of the north of England due to the "very strong and disruptive" winds forecast, while a yellow warning has been issued for the rest of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland from 3pm for the same reason.

On Friday, Storm Eunice will arrive in the British Isles. A yellow weather warning has been issued for all of England and Northern Ireland from midnight on Friday morning until 9pm that evening due to the "very strong winds that could cause significant disruption".

Storms Dudley and Eunice are the fifth and sixth storms to hit the UK that have been strong enough to be named since late-November 2021 when Storm Arwen hit, bringing significant damage to much of the north of the UK.

Storm Dudley, arriving on Wednesday afternoon, will have the greatest impact on Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the north of England, but Bristol is forecast to see rain and very high winds, peaking at 52 mph gusts at 6pm that will last most of the day on Thursday as well.

Meanwhile, Storm Eunice will arrive in the early hours of Friday morning, with winds peaking at 49 mph gusts at midday on Friday. The Met Office yellow warning will be in place until 9pm on Friday evening ahead of a milder weekend, although there will still be rain and wind passing through.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said; “An active jet stream is driving low-pressure systems across the country, both of which are likely to cause some disruption and National Severe Weather Warnings have been issued”.

The Met Office says that Bristol should expect the following during Friday's yellow weather warning:

  • There is a small chance that flying debris will result in a danger to life, with fallen trees, damage to buildings and homes, roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • Where damaging winds occur, there is a chance that long interruptions to power supplies and other services may occur
  • There is a small chance that roads, bridges and railway lines could close, with long delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
