Met Office issues yellow weather warning for snow and ice as 'Troll from Trondheim' hits

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow and ice as the 'Troll from Trondheim' hits the UK.

The north east of Scotland will be the storm from Norway's first UK target before it makes its way across Britain

Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of the West Midlands have meanwhile told to be on alert for ice on Thursday with the cold conditions are being caused by an arctic maritime airmass.

The entire east coast of England have also been place under the yellow warning on Wednesday and Thursday.

The snow showers and slippery surfaces may bring some travel disruption. The warning is in place from midnight tonight through to midday on Thursday.

Snow is set to arrive in Scotland with a weather warning now in place (PA)

Its first warning of the season predicts some areas could be about to see blizzard-like conditions.

Things are about to turn cold across the country with a weekend chill bringing with it "arctic air" and "drastic conditions".

The Met Office say: “Frequent wintry showers will spread into Northern Ireland through the early hours of Thursday then on to Wales and parts of the West Midlands during the morning.

“These will fall on frozen ground in many areas, leading to the formation of icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

Temperatures could soon plunge into "negative double figure" freefall (PA)

“In addition, showers are likely to fall as snow on high ground and perhaps more widely across Wales and the West Midlands during the day, with slight accumulations possible in places."

They added: "Showers will fall as snow to low levels inland on Wednesday, continuing through Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

"Accumulations of 2-5 cm are possible at lower levels, with 5-10 cm above 200 metres. Some drifting and blizzard conditions are likely in the strong northerly winds.

"In addition, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, mainly where some of the showers fall as rain or sleet on some coasts."

Aberdeen, Grampian, Orkney & Shetland and Strathclyde have all be told to prepare for the arctic blast.

The warning area has been expanded to include the Western Isles, they confirmed.

The Scandinavian storm is increasing the chances of flurry with parts of Britain already gearing up for their first heavy bout of snow this winter.

Forecasters suggest a spell of low pressure originating from Norway will see temperatures plunge as the first flurry of winter struck the Pennines this morning.
