Met Office issues yellow weather warning for part of Wales

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for fog for some parts of Wales, with visibility dropping to just 50m in parts. The warning was issued before midnight on Tuesday and is in place from 3am on Wednesday, February 8, to 11am on the same morning.

The warning reads: "Patches of freezing fog are likely to become more widespread towards dawn on Wednesday, particularly along river valleys and across eastern and southern England, with the visibility as low as 50 to 100 metres in a few places. Fog will slowly thin and clear later on Wednesday morning."

The yellow weather warning covers south east Wales, including Cardiff. It comes after the forecaster warned that a sudden stratospheric warning was expected to hit the UK at the end of the month bringing with it the possibility of cold, frosty weather. You can read more about that here.

The forecaster warns that there will be reduced visibility due to the freezing fog which could lead to some travel disruption and people should expect slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible. There is also the chance of delays or cancellations to flights.

Areas covered by the warning:

  • Caerphilly
  • Cardiff
  • Monmouthshire
  • Newport
  • Torfaen
  • Vale of Glamorgan

"Cloud amounts increasing this evening with some patchy light rain moving south during the early hours. Milder than last night, but a late frost is possible in places. Light winds. Minimum temperature 2 °C."

Thursday: "Cloud and occasional drizzle soon clearing southern areas to leave all areas dry with sunny periods. Light winds for most but breezy in the north. Maximum temperature 9 °C."

Outlook for Friday to Sunday: "Staying generally dry albeit often cloudy, with perhaps a few spots of drizzle at times. Occasional brighter periods are likely. Turning gradually milder with a reducing likelihood of frosts."
