After weeks of sunshine and dry skies, the weather’s taking a turn—and it’s not looking pretty for parts of southwest England, Wales, and the northwest. A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued, with the Met Office warning that things could get rather soggy from midday Tuesday through to Wednesday noon.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert explained that the bright, settled conditions are being pushed out as low pressure moves in from the west. “After a long spell of high pressure bringing dry weather and sunshine, gloomier and unsettled conditions are on the horizon,” he said. “Low pressure has become established to the west of the UK bringing cloud, rain showers, and lower temperatures for many.”
Rain is expected to sweep in from the west today, while the east may hold onto some dry and bright weather—for now. But don’t get too comfortable. Another batch of potentially heavy, showery rain is expected to hit eastern England by this evening and should clear by Tuesday morning, reported the Mirror.
The yellow warning comes as a low-pressure system near Portugal shifts toward the UK, with persistent downpours expected in affected areas. “We have issued a yellow warning for rain from midday on Tuesday until Wednesday afternoon,” Lehnert confirmed. “High rainfall totals are possible, but given the recent dry conditions, significant impacts are not anticipated.”
Still, it’s a bit of a weather rollercoaster. More rain is likely on Thursday, followed by yet another front rolling in Friday. So, if you’ve packed away the umbrella, it might be time to dig it back out.
Looking ahead to the Easter weekend, forecasters say things could go either way. It’s shaping up to be a mixed bag, with average temperatures, spells of unsettled weather, some dry breaks, and a few chilly nights in the mix.
“Temperatures this coming weekend are likely to be around average for the time of year, with potentially unsettled days, dry interludes, and chilly nights,” the update said.
So, while it’s not quite time to panic, it’s probably wise to keep the waterproofs handy—and maybe hold off on the barbecue plans just a little longer.
