Met office issues wind warning for North East on Wednesday with gusts of 50mph likely

Strong winds are set to hit the North East of England on Wednesday, leading to a yellow warning issued by the Met Office.

The Met Office warning is in place throughout Wednesday October 5. It includes all of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.

Gusts of up to 65mph are likely, the Met Office says, while spells of heavy rain are also forecast.

"There is a chance of a deep low-pressure system bringing gusts of 70 to 80 mph to northern parts of the UK on Wednesday. Should this develop disruption would be expected. However, the most likely scenario is for gusts of 55 to 65 mph within parts of the warning area," the warning says.

The forecaster says there is a risk of flying debris, building damage, road closures, power cuts and public transport disruption.

According to the Met Office's advanced forecast for Wednesday, issued on Monday, Hexham in Northumberland and Consett in County Durham can expect gusts of wind of up to 50mph at around 1pm. Speeds should be slightly lower to the east, with gusts of up to 43mph in Newcastle and 47mph in Sunderland.

Spells of rain - sometimes heavy - are also likely, mainly in the morning and afternoon according to the forecasts.

The yellow warning is set to be in place from 12.01am on Wednesday until 11am.
