Met Office Issues Urgent Freezing Fog Warning as UK Drivers Face Treacherous Conditions

The Met Office has issued a freezing fog warning for parts of the UK, urging drivers to take extra care as thick fog blankets the south. The national weather agency posted on X this morning, alerting the public to “dense freezing fog patches around in the south,” creating hazardous travel conditions.

A yellow weather warning remains in place along parts of the south coast until 9 am, with visibility expected to drop below 100 metres in some areas. The Met Office warned that this could lead to “tricky driving conditions,” and urged caution for anyone on the roads.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir provided an update, saying that weather fronts moving across the country will bring a mix of conditions over the next 36 hours. Parts of northwest Scotland could see between 16-18mm of rainfall, while strong winds are expected to ease slightly into Thursday.

She also noted that for those heading out early, it’s going to feel particularly cold across most of England and Wales, with frost forming in the south and fog taking its time to lift. “It could be murky in places if you are travelling,” she said. Meanwhile, northern parts of the country will see more cloud cover, and Scotland’s central belt is likely to experience some patchy morning rain.

Strong winds will continue across exposed areas in the northwest, with some gusts reaching gale force, while temperatures will feel noticeably milder further north.

The areas affected by the yellow fog warning include Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Southampton, West Sussex, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, Dorset, and Wiltshire.

Looking ahead to Thursday, the Met Office forecasts “patchy rain and a brisk southwesterly breeze” for Scotland and Northern Ireland, while most of England and Wales will enjoy some sunshine before cloud and showers arrive from the west later in the day. It’s expected to be milder compared to Wednesday.

From Friday to Sunday, conditions remain unsettled, with widespread showery rain developing on Friday, followed by brighter spells and scattered showers on Saturday. Sunday will start off dry for most, but rain is expected to move in from the southwest later on.

For now, those in affected areas should brace for reduced visibility and icy roads, so if you’re driving, take it slow and stay safe!
