Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for North East as unsettled weather continues

Heavy showers and thunderstorms could hit the North East today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms between noon and 6pm across the North East.

Forecasters say many places will miss the downpours but where they do occur they will be heavy, perhaps giving 10-20mm of rain in around one hour and up to 30 mm in two to three hours.

Hail and lightning are also likely to cause some hazardous conditions. Most of the showers and thunderstorms will die out by late afternoon or early evening.

People are being warned it could cause some flooding and disruption, with motorists warned it could affect driving conditions, while public transport could be delayed.

Despite the unsettled weather people can expect warm sunny spells and temperatures could reach 24°C.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington said: “What’s chiefly responsible for these thundery showers is that the UK is under the influence of low pressure, with daytime heating helping to develop unstable air which can be responsible for these bursts of heavy rain.”

Forecasters say showers are most likely to exert their influence more frequently in eastern areas of Scotland, as well as parts of North East England, south Wales and parts of the southwest.

However, many will see a good deal of dry weather on Wednesday, with more settled conditions in the southeast.
