Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester

While the Jubilee weekend has so far seen a flurry of warm weather and plenty of sun, the Met Office has warned that things will soon take a turn for the worse.

A yellow thunderstorm weather warning has been issued for large parts of England, including the North West and Greater Manchester. The yellow warning will be in place for Sunday, June 5 from 12am to 6pm.

The storms run the risk of causing flooding to homes and businesses with potential damange to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes. In areas where flooding or lightning may occur, delays to train and bus services will be expected.

Rebekah Sherwin, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, commented: "There remains some uncertainty on how far north it will stretch but southern areas are likely to see a spell of showers on Saturday and Sunday, which could turn heavy and thundery at times.

"However, there will also be some breaks in the cloud even here, and northern areas are most likely to stay fine and dry."

It comes shortly after a similar yellow warning was issued on Saturday, which saw southern parts of England take the brunt force of the bad weather.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates added: “There’s a sort of north/south split in our weather over the weekend with southern areas bearing the brunt of a couple of rounds of heavy rain showers and thunderstorms and areas further north seeing fine, dry and some warm and sunny weather as well.

“So quite big contrasts across the UK but for some of us the weather could cause a few problems over the next couple of days and, at the very least, be inconvenient given there’s lots of outdoor plans and festivities I expect on many people’s minds.”
