The Met Office has issued another yellow weather warning covering Greater Manchester for this weekend. Showery rain and sleet are likely to lead to a high risk of ice tonight, according to forecasters.
The yellow warning for ice covering the North West of England and parts of Wales is in place between 9pm tonight and 10.30am on Saturday morning. The Met Office warns that there will likely be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to an increased chance of accidents and injuries, while snow could fall on higher ground, leading to travel disruption.
The warning reads: "Bands of showery rain are expected to run inland tonight, turning to sleet and snow over some of the higher ground. Surfaces are very cold at present, posing the possibility of ice in some areas, the likelihood of this perhaps increased in places by 'wash-off' of road grit or salt. Above 200 to 300 metres elevation some snowfall is likely, with a few cm over some trans-Pennine routes."

Two more weather warnings are in place for Sunday. The majority of Greater Manchester is covered by a yellow warning for snow and ice, in place from 7am on Sunday until 9pm, while parts of south Manchester and Trafford fall under a warning for ice, in place between 3am and 2pm.
Forecasters say the large parts of the UK will be swept by snow on Saturday night with the potential for up to 15cm in the north of Scotland. The current severe weather conditions have caused major disruption in the last few days.
However, an end to the cold snap is now in sight, according to the Met Office. A band of rain followed by milder air is expected to move in on Sunday, bringing an end to below-zero chill.
Met Office meteorologist Ellie Wilson said: “A band of rain and snow is going to be moving north-eastwards across the country through Sunday. It’s bringing milder air behind it, but that milder air bumps into the cold air that’s where we’re seeing where the snow is likely to fall.”
She added: “That snow will quickly be followed by rain so any of those accumulations shouldn’t last too long. Because of the current cold conditions that we’ve seen, any of that snowfall will be falling onto cold frozen surfaces so there is a risk of ice here through the morning. That rain will quickly be following closely behind later on Sunday."
Ms Wilson said temperatures on Sunday afternoon onwards will be “on the rise” and will likely hit 9 to 10C. The meteorologist said that temperatures will likely have risen to 11-13C across the UK on Monday.
