Met Office issues Scotland weather update as temperatures to drop after warm Easter

Scotland's weather for the days ahead will turn chillier as the Met Office forecast predicts temperatures will gradually drop through next week.

After a hot Easter weekend where Glasgow enjoyed a positively balmy 19C, the summery conditions are expected to fade away.

But first, Scotland will enjoy a nice dry Thursday as western areas could hit 18C and 11-12C in the east.

Friday will be similarly warm, but the high will fall to 14C on Monday, reports the nation's weather service.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon told the Daily Record that parts of Scotland could experience the return of a light frost as the low hovers "just above freezing" in rural Scotland.

Braemar had the coldest recorded temperature in Scotland over Wednesday night as the mercury plunged to -3.2C.

He said: "We're hovering just above freezing for the next few days to the lower one degree or so in rural parts of Scotland.

"It's not until Monday night when we get closer to zero, we could see a return to a light frost in the beginning of next week in those rural locations.

"In terms of city centre temperature in more urban areas, it's not looking like we're going to be getting to below freezing in urban areas during the forecast period."

The forecast period, he explained, means the weather for the next five days.

Scots can probably store their brollies away for the time being.

Claydon deemed the forecast as "remarkably dry" in Scotland through early next week with most precipitation focussed in the south of the UK.

"We've got that area of high pressure keeping things pretty stable and settled across the northern half of the UK," he explained.

"Currently in our forecast period there's no indication of snow at the moment."

Highs in Scotland will be holding up into the teens through Monday and into Tuesday.

The Met Office's five day UK forecast

Today:

Sunny spells for most, and turning warm for much of the south and west. Feeling cooler near North Sea coasts as the easterly breeze increases; rather misty and grey for some, especially eastern Scotland at first and northeast England later.

Tonight:

Low cloud and mist returning to some eastern counties. The south also turning cloudier with time, perhaps the odd spot of rain. Northwest and western areas clearer and perhaps chilly.

Friday:

Low cloud in some eastern areas tending to disperse, leaving sunshine across many northern areas; fairly warm in the northwest. Southern parts of UK, cloudier and cooler, scattered afternoon showers.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Sunny spells and scattered showers, these especially in the east and south. Breezy through the weekend. Rather warm in the south and west, but colder by Monday.
