Met Office issues Scotland heatwave update as hot temperatures forecast across UK

The Met Office has issued an update on a potential heatwave on the way for Scotland and the rest of the UK this month.

Forecasters are expecting temperatures in the mid-20s for much of the country from May 13 onwards, with conditions set to be warmer than average for the time of year.

However, there is expected to be a north and south divide with "brighter conditions" in more southern areas of the UK in bad news for Scottish sun lovers. But things are still expected to be pleasant north of the border, with temperatures remaining at summer-like levels throughout the second half of the month.

Looking ahead to early June, meteorologists say: "Confidence during this period is typically low, but changeable weather appears to be the most likely outcome at this time Most areas will likely see some spells of unsettled weather, as well as periods of drier and brighter weather. Above average temperatures are slightly more likely than below average."

But temperatures are likely to hit mid-20s in the near future, British Weather Services Jim Dale told The Mirror.

"On the balance of things, I reckon a heatwave of some description is overdue and the second half of May is more likely than not to deliver a day or two with 25C in the UK", he said.

"But, there's still lots of water to go under the bridge before then." Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "Through next week fairly typical weather for the UK for the time of year. Outbreaks of rain at times, followed by showers but interspersed by sunny spells and it will feel pleasant enough in the sunny spells.

"But the main signal for temperatures is that those temperatures will be at or around average of the time of year. By the end of next week higher pressure could influence things a bit more to bring more settled weather for a time and nothing particularly settled or unsettled is flagged for the middle of May onwards.

"Next week is looking fairly average, fairly typical for the time of year, there will be some showers at times but also some warm sunshine and temperatures will be around average after a fairly showery Bank Holiday weekend." He added.
