Met Office issues New Year weather warning as North East set for deep freeze

The Met Office have issued a warning for the North East with the region set to freeze amid an artic blast.

The leading meteorologists have issued a 'yellow weather warning' with icy stretches likely to form on Monday (January 2) morning in the region and temperatures likely to remain low.

Following the recent wet weather, it is expected that surfaces will freeze over leading to icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office have also not ruled out few rain, sleet and snow showers may still affect these areas overnight. However, ice remains the main concern.

The warning has been issued for between midnight and 11.00am on Monday.

The North East has been warned of icy surfaces (Newcastle Chronicle)

The Met Office warned of the following conditions: "Following recent wet conditions surfaces are likely to remain wet into Monday morning and with a cold night icy stretches will readily form on untreated surfaces.

"A few rain, sleet and snow showers may still affect these areas overnight but ice remains the main hazard."

The Met Office have forecast a largely sunny day with a winter chill and strengthening winds as we head into the evening in the North East: "Any showers soon clearing east to leave a fine and largely sunny day.

"Winds becoming light, but feeling rather chilly. Winds strengthening overnight ahead of cloud and rain spreading east. Maximum temperature 4 °C."

A 'yellow weather warning' has been issued for the North East (Met Office)

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

  • Darlington
  • Durham
  • Gateshead
  • Hartlepool
  • Middlesbrough
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • North Tyneside
  • Northumberland
  • Redcar and Cleveland
  • South Tyneside
  • Stockton-on-Tees
  • Sunderland
