Met Office issues new weather warning for heavy rain set to bring more misery to flooded communities

Just 24-hours after parts of the country was battered by flooding and torrential rain, another weather warning for rain has been issued for Wales. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain covering the whole of Wales . The warning is in place from 9pm on Friday, January 13 to 12pm on January 14. There is a second warning for rain in the south of the country in place from 10pm on Friday to 12pm on Saturday.

The dry weather seen across the country on Friday after days of downpours appeared to be a well needed resbite, only to be cut short by the new warning. On Thursday, several parst fo the country was hit by flooding after days of heavy rain, accompanied by another weather warning,

The River Ely, Taff and Usk were among those that burst its banks with playgrounds, homes, pubs and entire roads affected by the floodwater. In some areas - such as Crickhowell - some roads were completely submerged by the rainwater causing travel chaos. Recovery is underway on Friday with people now scrambling to secure their property before the new warning comes into force.

The warning reads: "Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, will move in from the southwest on Friday evening then persist overnight into Saturday. 20 to 30 mm rain is likely quite widely with 40 to 50 mm on some hills. With conditions already very wet this is likely to cause some flooding.

"The rain will also be accompanied by strong winds, with gusts of 40-50 mph and possibly 60 mph on some exposed coasts in the south. The rain and strong winds will clear eastwards during Saturday daytime."

The Met Office forecast for Wales this weekend:

Friday: "A brighter day to come with sunny spells and a chance of showers. Windy again with coastal gales first thing, but winds gradually easing later. Feeling chillier than of late. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

"Somewhat lighter winds temporarily this evening with some rain in the north. Turning very windy and wet overnight with heavy rain and severe coastal gales by the morning. Becoming mild. Minimum temperature 5 °C."

Saturday: "Cloudy, wet and very windy during the morning. Turning more showery by lunchtime, with some sunny intervals and showers during the afternoon. Staying windy and turning colder through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 12 °C."

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: "Turning much colder with frosty nights and patchy ice. A mixture of sunny spells and showers, the showers falling as sleet or snow on Monday and Tuesday. Windy at times."
