Met Office issues new thunderstorm warning for this week in Greater Manchester

The Met Office has issued a further yellow thunderstorm warning covering Greater Manchester this week.

The warning has been issued from midday tomorrow (June 12) until 9pm. Nearly all of Greater Manchester is covered by this warning, except for some areas including parts of Wigan, Horwich, and areas just north of Bury.

A yellow weather warning has been in place all weekend but has since been extended into the beginning of next week. Rain is forecast for the late afternoon and evening, which could lead to thunderstorms and 'torrential downpours,' the Met Office says.

The weather warning, issued at 10am this morning, says: "Thunderstorms and torrential downpours are expected to break out across central England and Wales during Monday.

"These will be slow moving and intense leading to some large accumulations with in excess of 30 mm in an hour for some locations and the potential for 60-80 mm or more in a few hours where thunderstorms align for a time. Frequent lightning and hail are likely to be additional hazards."

This could lead to flooding of some homes and disruption on the roads, the Met Office adds.
