Conditions across the North East are unsettled until the weekend, with the region set to be battered by wind and rain.
But how are things looking in the long term as we get ready to usher in another new year?
The first week of January looks to be one filled with drizzle and heavy rain, with downpours particularly on higher ground, though there will be some breaks mid-week for sunny spells.

Intermittent wind and rain will continue until mid-January, at which point a drop in temperature could see snow return to the North East along with overnight frosts.
Heading towards the end of the month temperatures will rise slightly, bringing the wetter weather we’re all used to in the early months of the year. The Met Office does, however, say that from January 11 onwards there is uncertainty surrounding weather conditions, but changeable weather is the most likely scenario.
