Met Office issues Edinburgh snow and ice warning as freezing conditions continue this weekend

The Met Office have issued another yellow weather warning for Edinburgh, as snow and ice threatens disruption to air, rail and road travel.

It means Edinburgh has now spent a full week under a yellow weather warning, with three issued since Monday, March 6. The latest yellow warning for snow and ice falls into place on Saturday afternoon remaining until Sunday morning.

The Met Office forecasts snow, with icy conditions set to create difficult conditions across the capital. Forecasters expect flurries across the weekend, with overnights lows of -2C causing snowfall to freeze over on roads and pathways.

Up to 10cm of snow is set to fall across Edinburgh and higher ground over the weekend, with freezing rain coming in to melt the majority of it all. However, the snow will return after the rain, with up to 1cm to fall on Sunday morning.

When is the weather warning coming into effect?

The weather alert for snow and ice will come into place at 3pm on Saturday, March 11. The warning will be lifted on Sunday, March 12 at 6am.

Met Office forecasters have given the following reason for the new warning: "Further snowfall has the potential to cause disruption Saturday evening into Sunday."

What to expect from the weather warning

The Met Office have warned people to be aware of the following issues:

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Possible delays or cancellations to air travel
  • Bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times possible
  • Untreated pavements and cycle paths might be impassable
  • A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
