Met Office issues amber weather warning for 'very heavy showers and thunderstorms' in Wales

The weeks of sunny weather looks set to break this evening with The Met Office issuing weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms across Wales. The forecasted had issued a yellow warning for all of Wales for Saturday night into Sunday and this warning warning has now been upgraded to amber in parts.

The amber thunderstorm warning, which covers parts of Powys, Denbighshire and Flintshire is in place from 5.45pm to 9pm this evening (Sunday, June 10). The forecaster says that the storms could cause surface water flooding that will impact travel and property.

The warning reads: "Very heavy showers and thunderstorms have developed along a line running from the Worcestershire towards northeast Wales and Merseyside. The most intense showers are expected to transfer northwards with time.

"As such some locations could see multiple showers and thunderstorms, resulting in 50-60 mm of precipitation in an hour or so (this represents around a month's worth of rain), and perhaps some isolated spots seeing more than 100 mm in a few hours. Lightning, hail, and perhaps towards the east of this area the odd strong gust of wind, will be additional hazards."

The areas covered by the warning include:

  • Welshpool
  • Ruthin
  • Denbigh
  • Holywell
  • Wrexham
  • Llangollen

The Met Office says the storm means there is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and locally gusty winds and/or hail leading to longer journey times by car and likely some cancellations to train and bus services. They say there will probably be some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes, floodwater and strong winds. Some flooding of homes and businesses is also possible as is short-term loss of power.

Sunday:

"A murky start around coasts then turning hot and humid through the day with some warm sunshine. A risk of heavy showers developing in the afternoon which may be thundery. Maximum temperature 25 °C."

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

"Remaining warm with a continued risk of heavy showers, perhaps thundery at times on Monday. Rather humid, perhaps feeling uncomfortable overnight. Fine and sunny for most on Tuesday and Wednesday."
