Met Office issues 39-hour snow warning for Leeds as 'significant disruption' expected

The Met Office has issued a yellow snow warning for Leeds and other parts of the country, as the end of the week could bring the UK’s coldest weather so far in 2023.

Forecasters are predicting heavy snow will hit Leeds and the rest of the country on Thursday, March, 9 and Friday, March, 10, causing significant disruption.

The Met Office warns temperatures could reach below as -10C, and 10cm of snow could fall. People are being warned that roads and railways could be affected by “difficult travel conditions.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert and has placed Yorkshire, north-east England and north-west England under a level three alert, with the rest of England at level two. A level three alert means there is a 90 per cent chance of severely cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow, which could increase the health risk to vulnerable patients, the NHS said.

All areas are under alert between 1am on Monday and midnight on Thursday.

The full warning reads: "Snow could develop quite widely across the warning area on Thursday and Friday as a potentially quite deep area of low pressure moves across the UK.

"Parts of Northern Ireland, north Wales and northern England are currently expected to see the worst of the conditions on Thursday, with parts of Scotland and northern England then seeing the heaviest snow on Friday.

"Event totals could bring 5 to 10 cm of snow to many locations, even at low elevations, with potentially 15 to 20 cm accumulating across the northern portion of the warning area.

"Higher elevations of the North Pennines, Southern Uplands, higher parts of the Central Belt and the southern Highlands may see as much as 30 to 40 cm of snow in places. In addition, there is potential for strong winds, which may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow."
