Met Office gives verdict on whether UK will get heatwave this bank holiday

The Met Office has shared its forecast for the bank holiday weekend amid reports of a heatwave.

It's been reported in the news this week that a heatwave could be on its way to the UK driven by an African plume. While sun is expected in Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside this week, the Met Office has said the forecast will not result in dramatically high temperatures.

The weather experts said the warmth we experience will be "home grown" as clear skies will allow more of the May sunshine to reach ground level. This means temperatures will gradually rise to expected highs of 25°C for parts of the UK later this week.

The forecast for Liverpool shows sunny spells throughout the bank holiday weekend, with highs of 18 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures are predicted to reach 17 degrees on bank holiday Monday when it will be sunny changing to partly cloudy by night time.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “If you have heard media hyperbole that a heatwave driven by an African plume will bring intense heat to the UK in the next few days you are going to be disappointed – this isn’t true. However, if you are looking forward to a spell of largely fine, sunny and warm conditions across the majority of the UK, then you are going to be in luck.”

Temperatures will gradually rise through the week, with an expected high of 24°C, possibly 25°C, by Thursday. According to the Met Office, these temperature highs are expected to be in parts of East Wales, West Midlands and South West England.

An onshore breeze will keep temperatures slightly lower in the south east of England, where we usually see the highest temperatures.

The forecast for the North West from Thursday-Saturday said: "High pressure keeps it mostly dry this week. Plenty of sunny spells with some cloudier periods possible. Feeling warm in the sunshine and light winds but nights often quite chilly."
