As the Met Office predict blizzards and snow blasts across the North East this month, Northumbrian Water is reminding customers not to be complacent when it comes to protecting their properties.
Although spring is just weeks away, the water company is urging people to take the icy weather warning seriously in order to reduce the chances of costly repairs and potential flooding caused by frozen pipes.
According to the Met Office, strong winds and snow showers are set to hit the region in the early part of March – meaning that additional teams will be working hard through the wintery conditions to ensure that the water continues to flow, and will be on hand to repair leaks and bursts in communities.

However, to protect their own properties, people are encouraged to take the following steps to protect their pipes and avoid costs of up to £8,800 in repairs:
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas, such as the garage or attic.
- Seal any cracks or openings in the walls or foundation near pipes.
- Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses.
If you suspect a pipe has burst, it's important to turn off the water supply and call a plumber immediately. If a pipe does freeze, residents should not attempt to thaw it with an open flame or torch. Instead, use a hair dryer or heating pad to thaw the pipe slowly.
Jim Howey, head of water networks at Northumbrian Water, said: “Although we have seen some glorious sunshine recently across the North East, it’s important that we don’t get complacent and continue to be prepared against the cold snap.
“The temperatures are still extremely cold and pipes can still burst, so by taking these simple steps, residents can protect their pipes and avoid costly repairs.”
