Met Office forecasts Bristol to freeze as snow falls in the West Country

Parts of the West Country woke up to a sprinkling of snow this morning with temperatures expected to drop to freezing in Bristol.

Weather watcher Mark Shackleton has captured a beautiful snapshot of one of the tors in Dartmoor, with winter not yet loosening its grip on the south west region as we go into March. The Met Office has predicted a mild overcast day in Bristol on Sunday with highs of 7C, although the frosty weather is set to return overnight with freezing temperatures predicted in the early hours of Monday morning.

By lunchtime, the temperatures are due to climb back again to 8C on Monday although it will feel much colder. There is little chance of rain at the start of next week although the Met Office predicts light showers by nightfall on Wednesday. The rest of the week is expected to be cloudy and mild in the Bristol region.

Snow fell in Bristol last week (February 24) in a short-lived flurry of wintery conditions. It was bizarrely followed by blazing sunshine with some areas reporting heavy hail downpours.

Let's take a look at what weather lies ahead in the Met Office forecast for the South West region:

Today

Most places will have a dry and bright day with some sunny spells. However, the cloud could thicken enough at times to give the odd light shower, especially in the north and east. Breezy along coasts and feeling rather cold. Maximum temperature 9C.
