Met Office forecast for King Charles' first visit to Wales on Friday with weekend of sunshine expected

There will be "cool" and "brisk" winds as King Charles III makes his first Welsh visit on Friday as temperatures drop. The Met Office forecast is expecting a "change" in the weather over the weekend, despite it remaining dry and sunny. While temperatures could drop to as low as 3°C overnight, it will be dry in Wales over the weekend with "lots of sunshine".

People are expected to line the streets of Cardiff on Friday, September 16, as the new King makes his first visit to the city as part of the national period of mourning. And those hoping to catch a glance at the new head of state will be in luck as it is dry forecast for the occasion.

And while it is noticeably cooler in most parts of the country, some places will still see highs of 18 °C, despite the brisk winds. BBC forecaster Matt Taylor says that "cooler days and chillier nights" are on the way, adding: "You'll notice the difference most in some southern areas. A touch of grass frost even possible for a few this weekend."

The Met Office forecast for Wales for Friday reads: "A few morning showers are possible, mainly in the north and the west. Otherwise, staying generally dry with plenty of bright sunshine but feeling quite cool in brisk northerly winds. Maximum temperature 18 °C."

The weekend looks to be much of the same with the chance of light showers. The forecast says: "Largely fine with some sunshine at times. Cloudier periods as well with perhaps the odd light shower. Cool for the time of year with some chilly nights, especially at first."

Charles III will make his first visit to Wales as King, travelling to the capital with the Queen Consort for a service to remember Elizabeth II on Friday. His first stop off will be at Llandaff Cathedral where he will meet some of the country's most senior clergy. Many streets in the area have been closed throughout the week, while residents have been told to move their cars ahead of the Royal visit.

The pair will then visit the Senedd and Cardiff Castle during their time in the city. Crowds are expected to gather in each of the locations to pay their respects to the Queen.

Looking ahead to the recently announced bank holiday to coincide with the Queen's funeral, the forecast looks to remain dry. The long-range Met Office forecast for Monday, September 19 to Wednesday September 28 reads: "Fine and dry for most with sunny spells at the start of this period, though perhaps cloudier in the east and parts of the northwest, where occasional showers and a few spots of rain are possible respectively.

"Winds generally light but still a little fresher along some eastern coasts. Temperatures rather cool initially but should return closer to average through the week. Mid-week, a band of thicker cloud and light rain may spread across northern and northwestern parts and then possibly edge slowly southeastwards, weakening as it does so. Wetter and windier conditions are likely at times in the northwest for the remainder of the period whilst the southeast sees more in the way of dry weather. Overnight mist and fog patches possible throughout but these should clear quickly."
