Met Office forecast for Easter weekend as UK expected to be warmer than Majorca

Temperatures are set to rise across the UK and it could be hotter than Majorca on Thursday, just in time for the Easter weekend. The Met Office has said that the "general trend" is for it to turn warmer with high pressure increasing towards the end of the week.

With temperatures expected to be between three and seven degrees above average for Wales.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud says: "It is all change as we go into Monday. Warmer conditions will be brought by tropical maritime air coming in from the south west."

GMB weather forecaster Laura Tobin admitted it could be warmer than Majorca on Thursday but was insistent that we are not going to see a heatwave. She said: "Temperatures are set to warm up. Temperatures this time year are normally between 10 and 14 °C and they will be way above average with highs of 20°C., which is fantastic news for the Easter holidays."

She said there would be some Sahara dust heading toward the UK.

BBC Wales forecaster Sue Charles said that it "looks mild right through to the Easter weekend", but it will not always be dry.

Here is the current forecast for the Easter weekend:

Good Friday

The Met Office forecast for Wales says: "Low cloud, mist and fog are possible, especially during the mornings, but feeling warm in the sunshine."

Its forecast for the UK says: "Eastern and southern area generally fine and dry. Potential for rain to move into western regions."

The BBC forecast for the UK says: "On Good Friday, rain could be restricted to Scotland and Northern Ireland but it is possible for drier conditions to take hold from the afternoon."

Saturday

The BBC forecast says: "Over the Easter weekend, there are signs that the settled pattern will continue with any wetter weather confined to the Northern Isles."

Easter Sunday

The BBC long-range forecast says: "If this pattern persists, some long sunny spells are possible over most regions. Temperatures over the weekend are forecast to be around 2C above average."

Meanwhile, motorists have been warned that this weekend's Easter getaway will be the busiest on the UK's roads in at least eight years.

An estimated 21.5 million leisure trips will be made by car between Good Friday and Easter Monday, the RAC said. That is the most since the organisation began tracking motorists' Easter plans in 2014. The busiest single day on the roads over the bank holiday weekend is expected to be Good Friday.

Drivers wanting to avoid as much congestion as possible are urged to set off before 9am or delay their journeys until after 7.30pm.

RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: "After two years of relatively quiet Easter bank holidays on the roads, our research suggests a return to traffic levels that are much more typical of this time of year.

"It's very possible this weekend could turn out to be one of the busiest for leisure journeys for many years.

"Add in the impact of disruption on the rail network and one of the biggest fixtures of the sporting calendar taking place this weekend, and you have all the ingredients needed for problems on the roads. Traffic volumes will likely be even higher if some warm spring sunshine makes an appearance.". Read how EasyJet and Ryanair passport warnings leave travellers confused over travel rules here.

In addition to traffic jams, motorists also face the most expensive Easter on record when it comes to fuel prices.

Latest Government figures show the average cost of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts on April 4 was 161.9p, with diesel at 176.0p.
