The Met Office has extended its 'Yellow' weather warning for thick fog. In an update issued at 4.23am this morning, the forecaster expanded the warning area expanded to cover more of eastern Wales, the east Midlands and Vale of York.
The alert cames into force at 4pm yesterday and continues until 11am this morning. Travellers have been warned to expect delays on roads, rail and in the air after the Met Office extended its yellow fog warning for much of the UK.
The warning covers dense fog moving out from the South through Central England and eastern parts of Wales and up towards the North-east through this morning (December 2). Much of west and north Wales is likely to escape the worst of the conditions, as are South-east of England and Scotland.
The Met Office is warning of slower journey times throughout much of the country, with delays to bus and train services possible and the chance of delays or cancellations to flights. It says: "Areas of fog will bring some difficult travel conditions on Friday morning.
"Areas of fog will continue to bring large areas of poor visibility, falling to less than 100 metres in places. The fog is expected to clear from the east during Friday morning."
The Met Office is advising motorists to avoid travel if possible until the fog clears. It says that those who need to be in their car should drive very slowly with dipped headlights as full-beam lights reflect off the fog to cause a 'white wall' effect. Fog lights should be switched off when visibility improves.
Flights could be delayed because air traffic controllers will need to increase the gap between planes that are landing and taking off. Travellers are advised to check with their airline before setting off.
The Met Office says that parts of the following areas will be affected until the fog lifts around lunchtime: East Midlands, West Midlands, London & the South-east, the South-west, Yorkshire and Humber and Hampshire.
