Met Office extends thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester

The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning for thunderstorms today (June 10).

The warning initially only covered some areas of Greater Manchester from Manchester to Leigh and the boroughs to the south of the region. However, within the last hour the thunderstorm warning has been updates to cover all of Greater Manchester.

The warning is in place from 2pm until 10.30pm. Thunderstorms are being forecast for a lot of areas within the region from between 4pm to 7pm with heavy rain and lightning expected.

Updating their warning, the Met Office said it now extended into the north west of England. They said that between 30 to 40mm of rain could fall within an hour in areas affected by the warning, with places hit by hail, lightning, and strong winds.

The rain showers will be scattered however, so some places within the warning zone will remain dry, the Met Office added. Quick flooding could also affect the roads.

Explaining the reason for the update, the Met Office says: "Warning area has been extended northwards across more of northwest England. The text has been updated to suggest a likely focus towards the west. End time slightly extended.

"High temperatures across parts of England and Wales on Saturday are expected to trigger a scattering of showers and thunderstorms, perhaps with the focus towards the west of the warning area. Some of these storms could produce torrential downpours, bringing 30-40 mm in an hour, while one or two spots affected by multiple showers could see in excess of 60 mm across a few hours.

"Hail, strong gusts of wind, and lightning will be possible additional hazards. Despite this, some places in the warning area will remain dry, or see little rain, due to the scattered nature of the heaviest showers."
