Met Office, BBC and Accuweather verdicts on chances of a July heatwave

The Met Office, BBC Weather and Accuweather have given their verdicts as to whether the country will get a heatwave in July.

The Weather Company reports that extreme heat, of up to 40C, could last as long as two weeks next month. The Met Office said the high temperatures are "not out of the question" with a greater than normal chance of heatwaves' in July.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said: "Because of the change in climate our extreme temperatures are continuously being pushed. There is an increasing chance these extremes could get pushed further."

"We got 40C last year and before that happened no one thought there was an outside chance. There’s also a possibility we do continue to see those trends."

BBC's weather forecast said in the the middle of the July we could see "the north could become drier while wetter and perhaps thundery conditions develop in parts of the southern UK, especially the south-west". Temperatures, it adds "should still be a little above average in most areas".

As we enter the second half of July, its forecast continues, we may see: "northern areas potentially drier than southern, and most of the UK seeing above-normal temperatures, except for windward coasts."

Accuweather, meanwhile, predicts the hottest day of next month to fall on Wednesday, July 19. It predicts highs of 23C that feel more like 24C with a 20% chance of rain.

Looking at July as a whole, there is a mix of cloudy, rainy and sunny weather. The coldest predicted day is Thursday, July 6, when there is said to be "a shower in spots in the morning; otherwise, after a cloudy start, sunshine returns".
