Marilyn Monroe's legacy of glamour and style was carried forward at The Met Gala by Kim Kardashian who squeezed into the icons original gown.
Kim oozed elegance as she appeared effortlessly in the late movie legend's $5million sheer beaded creation for the star studded event.
Now, throwback shots show how dazzling Monroe looked when she first appeared wearing the nude-coloured figure-hugging gown to sing a sultry version of Happy Birthday to President John F Kennedy in front of thousands at Madison Square Garden in 1962.
In the archive images Marilyn appears on stage showcasing the incredible figure-hugging gown and as she bursts into song.
The gown, which contains more than 2,500 handstitched crystals, originally cost $12,000 (£9,500) and the movie star had to be sewn into it.
The dress was first sold at auction in 1999 for over a million dollars as part of a sale of Monroe's estate with Christie's.
It then sold for $4.8 million at Julien's Auctions in 2016, and was later acquired by Ripley's.
Monroe's dress was considered scandalous, with brief footage from the 1962 appearance capturing audible gasps when Monroe took off her fur coat to reveal it.
''Nowadays everyone wears sheer dresses, but back then that was not the case,'' Kardashian told Vogue.
''In a sense, it’s the original naked dress. That’s why it was so shocking.”
Sharing a shot of her outfit Kim told followers: "Met Gala — In America: An Anthology of Fashion
"I am so honored to be wearing the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. It is a stunning skintight gown adorned with more than 6,000 hand-sewn crystals by costumier Jean Louis.
"Thank you Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for giving me the opportunity to debut this evocative piece of fashion history for the first time since the late Marilyn Monroe wore it. I am forever grateful for this moment."
Kardashian was the final celebrity to walk the Met Gala red carpet, joined by Pete Davidson.
She swapped her long black hair for a tight platinum blonde bun to complete her emulation of Monroe.
The reality TV star and entrepreneur told Vogue she had to lose 16 pounds to fit into the dress.
That stars decision to shed the pounds was one uttered in the line in 2009’s Bride Wars , though to paraphrase: ''You don’t alter Monroe’s dress to fit you; you alter yourself to fit Monroe’s dress.''
But due to the valuable gown - the most expensive ever sold at auction - the star had to switch out of the outfit after the red carpet runway into a replica gown.
Kim hadn't splashed her cash on the gown but was permitted to loaning the historic piece, but not permitted to sit down in the figure-hugging creation.
She was ushered into a special changing area to switch into a replica gown to ensure the original remained in pristine condition to be preserved by Ripleys Believe It Or Not Museum, where it is maintained in a temperature-and humidity-controlled room.
