Met Gala 2023: Rihanna and Kim Kardashian lead the glamour at fashion's biggest night of the year

Fashion's most glamorous and star-studded night of the year did not disappoint as the Met Gala returned to New York City in spectacular style.

A sea of A-listers arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to pay homage to German designer Karl Lagerfield, with guests asked to honour his most famous looks as the dress code.

Kim Kardashian arrived swathed in 50,000 pearls in a custom Schiaparelli gown that flaunted her hour-glass figure.

The reality star turned fashion mogul said 'what is more Karl than iconic Chanel pearls?' when asked to describe her choice - although some fans suggested she appeared to be recreating her infamous 2007 Playboy look with her choice.

She was joined by her sisters Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner who both looked just as incredible.

Makeup mogul Kylie wowed in a dramatic red gown designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.

The asymmetric dress hugged her incredible figure and she matched the gown with a two-toned robe made of a light blue silky material.

She wore her hair in a stylish up-do and decided to keep her jewellery to a minimum in order to keep all the attention on her outfit.

This year, Kendall wore a sequin leotard with caped sleeves which she paired with huge heeled boots.

Rihanna and her partner A$AP Rocky made a fashionably late entrance to the Met Gala, but their outfits were definitely worth the wait.

Rihanna brought some drama as she arrived wearing a floral white dress by Valentino. Her white gown featured a long, sweeping train and she wore a structured ivory top covered in roses.

The singer's top also featured a matching hood which completely engulfed her head.

She finished off her iconic look with fingerless gloves and a pair of white sunglasses with huge fake eyelashes attached.

Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz wore matching jewels as they packed on the PDA in New York.

Instead of the traditional white shirt look, Brooklyn opted for a semi-sheer black shirt which left his bare chest on show.

He completed the outfit with a number of pearl chains which matched his wife's jewellery selection.

As well as the matching charms, Nicola opted for a design which perfectly clung to her petite frame. She wore a ruffled white gown which featured a corset-style top before trailing out below.

Model Gigi Hadid opted for a gothic bridal look, wearing an edgy black Givenchy ensemble. She posed for the cameras in a strapless corset top and matching low-rise skirt.

Gigi completed her look with a long flowing train and three strings of pearls around her neck.

Emily Ratajkowski turned heads as she stepped out wearing a plunging gown designed by Tory Burch which featured dainty black ribbons.

The glamorous number featured cut-out panels and she completed her look with a smoky eye and voluminous wavy hair.

Arriving just minutes after the model, Olivia Wilde stepped out wearing a gown inspired by Chloe's 1983 Violin Dress, designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld.

The pair managed to avoid an awkward run-in, after Olivia admitted she felt "betrayed" by pal Emily, who kissed the director's ex-boyfriend Harry Styles just months after their split.

Serena Williams and Karlie Kloss both used the iconic fashion event to announce their latest pregnancies to the world.

Tennis superstar Serena put her bump on display as she walked the red carpet in a curve-hugging gown alongside beaming partner Alexis Ohanian.

While supermodel Karlie put an affectionate hand on her stomach as she posted for photos with her husband Joshua Kushner.

Heiress Paris Hilton pulled out all of the stops to mark her debut Met Gala appearance.

Her arrival was delayed by protestors, but she didn't let it affect her grand entrance. The 42-year-old looked stunning as she walked the red carpet for the first time in a beautiful black Marc Jacobs design.

Paris' makeup was on point as her dark eye shadow allowed her to perfectly stare down the lens of photographers in a sultry fashion.

Dua Lipa arrived in style wearing a gorgeous vintage cream Chanel gown from 1992.

The dress featured a very flattering form-fitting waist and a fringe hem, with the singer also wearing a number of diamonds from Tiffany & Co.

Pedro Pascal stepped out wearing a pair of Valentino short shorts which he paired with an eye-catching red trench coat, matching shirt and skinny black tie.

He slicked his hair back and finished his look with black combat boots and calf-high socks.

Billie Eilish arrived at the Met Gala with her brother Finneas O'Connell and the singer went for a striking look on the red carpet wearing a black lace gown designed by Simone Rocha.

The dress was made using completely repurposed fabrics which were patched together to create an incredible lace-edged gown.

She paired her gothic outfit with some elbow-length gloves and matching translucent stockings.

Lily Collins certainly went all out for the 2023 Met Gala theme which instructed guests to honour the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The 34-year-old printed the letters KARL on the train of her gown, which featured a white bodice and a long black skirt.

Cara Delevingne also paid tribute to her "dear friend" Karl as she transformed into the iconic designer for her red carpet look.

The model donned a short silver wig which had been styled into textured waves by hairstylist Danielle Priano.

Cara also donned a white mini shirt-dress, black thigh-high leg warmers and fingerless gloves.

She completed her look with some silver jewellery, black stilettos and aviator sunglasses.

Vanessa Hudgens commanded attention at the Met Gala as she wore a racy black and white gown with cut-out panels and a thigh-high split.

The actress, 34, went for a dramatic makeup look as she wore some striking black eyeliner.

Doja Cat certainly made a statement on the red carpet as she dressed as Karl Lagerfeld's beloved feline Choupette.

Choupette was Karl's pride and joy and the singer really went for this year's theme which paid tribute to the late iconic designer.

The songstress, 27, turned heads as she opted for a beautiful Oscar De La Renta outfit and bizarre cat face prosthetics.

Doja Cat wasn't the only star who took inspiration from Choupette.

Jared Leto was unrecognisable as he hit the red carpet wearing a full-body white furry cat suit.

He revealed his identity as he took off the large head to pose for photographers.

The style was complete with cat ears and a selection of stunning jewels.

Nicole Kidman was joined by her husband Keith Urban as they packed on the PDA at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Moulin Rouge actress looked absolutely gorgeous in a pale pink sequinned Chanel gown which featured a dramatic feathered train.

Penelope Cruz looked beautiful in a bridal-inspired look, with her dress complete with a white lace hood.

Jennifer Lopez wowed wearing a cut-out gown which showed off her cleavage and toned midriff.

The singer, 53, looked super chic dressed in a black and pink gown which cinched her in at the waist. She paired her look with some black gloves and a stylish hat.

Rita Ora looked sensational in a daring black gown with cut-out mesh panels running down the side.

Rachel Smith arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art wearing a strapless silver gown which had ruffles cascading over her hips.

The former Miss USA winner accessorised her dress with a silver butterfly bracelet and some chic silver earrings.

The famous faces in attendance at this year's Met Gala will be paying tribute to the iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld, following his death in 2019 at the age of 85.

He was the creative director of French fashion house Chanel and the array of stars at the annual fashion bash will no doubt be hoping to do Karl proud.

The dress code is "in honour of Karl", with guests able to choose from his vast archives at Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain, Patou and his eponymous brand.

Prior to the celebrities arriving on the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art this evening, a whole number of famous faces paid tribute to the late fashion designer ahead of this year's bash kicking off.

Following the theme ahead of time on Sunday, Rihanna took to Instagram to show off a Chanel-heavy ensemble in tribute to the late German designer and his work with the French fashion house.

The Love On The Brain singer, 35, looked incredible as she adorned her blossoming baby bump with a white fur dress and black fur bolero jacket with an accompanying hat - completing the look with a pair of glasses rocking Chanel's iconic double-C logo.

Despite not being invited to this year's Met Gala, Lily Allen paid homage to Karl as she shared a number of snaps of herself posing with the fashion iconic before his death in 2019.

The singer-turned-actress, once a Chanel ambassador, captioned the shots: "Not in NY and also NFI but still feels like as good a day as any for a Karl appreciation post. Here’s to The best to ever do it. miss him so much. X."

Mum-to-be Lindsay Lohan also shared memories of her time with Karl on Instagram, telling her followers: "Treasuring moments I had with Karl forever."
