Met Gala 2022: Kylie Jenner fans slam 'hideous' wedding dress despite touching meaning

Superstar Kylie Jenner has left many recoiling back in horror with her star-studded Met Gala wedding dress look. The make-up influencer emerged onto the red carpet last night (May 2) wearing a ruffled floor-length white gown and a backwards baseball cap.

The cap itself was styled with floral appliques and a vail which slightly obscured the 24-year-old's face. Beneath the dress she wore a T-shirt inspired mesh top.

Layered under the mesh was a ruched white spaghetti strap bodice with a sweetheart neckline. Beneath her dress she wore a pair of transparent heels.

The model had customised her outfit with a pair jewelled dangly earrings that rested on the tops of her shoulders. Kylie - who has been highly praised for her Met Gala fashion in the past - has received widespread criticism for the look, even from her own fans.

Taking to Twitter some fans accused the star of deliberately wearing the "most hideous thing possible" but still commended her for doing so. @ophelynn said: "I truly believe Kylie Jenner was just like f**k it they’re gonna hate whatever I wear so I’m going to wear the most hideous thing possible and I love her for it."

Another Twitter user oddly compared the dress to 2016, saying: "Kylie Jenner’s met gala outfit looks like the year 2016 I don’t know how to explain it … it just does."

@zoeeee1211 accused the celeb of "not caring" about her dress. They said: "Definition of not caring what the theme was and showing up in whatever cause your Kylie Jenner."

@___annierose claimed she'd been traumatised by the outfit, saying: "Kylie Jenner's Met outfit was absolutely traumatising."

Not all fans were critical of the dress. @starkmantis tweeted their support for Kylie's dress stating the look was a "great idea". They said: "Unpopular opinion but I think Kylie Jenner's look isn't too bad. It's about fashion in America, I think it was a great idea to make a mix of how it's evolving."

Many of the people adding to the wave of criticism may be unaware that the dress was actually a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh. 'OFF' was printed across the front, this suggested a nod to the fashion designer's Off-White label.

Abloh was just 41 years old when he died in November 2021. During a 12 year career he was founder and CEO of Off-White, artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton and creative director of Donda.

@MishaFigs pointed out that many people who were hating the look originally were now loving it due to the connection to the late fashion designer. They said: "Everyone was hating Kylie Jenner's outfit, then they found out it’s Virgil’s design and now they love it."
