Met Eireann Ireland weather forecast warns of icy conditions with snow before 'wet' weekend

Ireland is set to shiver as temperatures will plummet to as low as minus three degrees tonight.

Today will start off cold as the national forecaster has predicted icy conditions with sleet and possible snow.

The day will, however, be relatively clear with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Temperatures will stick to between four and seven degrees with a chance of thunder.

Met Eireann's forecast for Thursday read: "A cold start to Thursday with some frost and ice, and some sleet and snow showers, mainly across the northwest.

"Sunny spells and scattered showers will continue through the day, some heavy or thundery with possible hail. Showers will be most frequent in Connacht and Ulster where some will continue to fall as sleet or possibly snow, mainly on hills.

"Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees with fresh and gusty northwest winds, making for an added wind chill factor."

The mercury will drop to below freezing as temperatures will see the lows of minus three degrees tonight with a sharp frost setting in and some icy stretches forming.

Friday is set to start off very cold before setting into a "wet and windy" day and a mild night with lowest temperatures set to hit four degrees.

Here is the forecast for the weekend:

Saturday

"Saturday will be breezy with widespread showers, merging to longer spells of rain at times. Rain may be heavy in places.

"There will be limited bright spells. Highest temperatures of eight to 11 degrees in fresh and gusty southwest winds.

Saturday night

"Showers will continue overnight with some clear intervals. Showers will gradually ease with dry spells developing especially in eastern areas. Lowest temperatures of four to six degrees. Fresh southwest winds will moderate overnight.

Sunday

"Some uncertainty in the forecast for Sunday. There will likely be further scattered showers with some bright or sunny spells.

"However there is the chance that a spell of rain will move up over Ireland from the south. Highest temperatures of seven to 10 degrees with moderate westerly winds.

"Any rain will clear on Sunday night to good clear spells and scattered showers. Lowest temperatures of two to four degrees."
